Day
1 - Cayenne
- Upon
arrival you will be greeted by our bilingual tour guide. After
check in at our hotel, we will take a short city tour of Cayenne
City. This atmospheric capital and major port offers many attractive
sights. We will visit the Jesuit-built residence of the Prefect
in the Place de Grenoble, the Canal Laussat (1777), and the Botanical
Gardens. In the centre of town, the Musée Départamental
features exhibits on indigenous peoples and the notorious penal
settlements on Devil's Island. Towards the end of the day we will
stop at the Place des Palmistes were we will find lively cafés
and market stalls.
Day
2 - Cayenne
- Today we will visit the city of Kourou were we have a short
visit to the Ariane Space Center and then visit the Devil's Island,
famous for the more than 30,000 French convicts who died in its
hell-hole prisons. That is the prison where Steve McQueen and
Dustin Hoffman try to escape from its jungle in the movie Papillon
at the IIle Royale. If time and the government permit we will
visit the Amerindian villages at Haut-Maroni and Haut Oyapoc.

3 -
Calcoene - Today we leave early in the morning towards
Macapa. We will overnight in the small town near the Lagoa Piratuba
Biologic Reserve.

4 -
Macapa - This morning we departure early in the morning
to Macapa. Officialy founded in 1815, this city that lies on the
Amazon River, was inhabited mostly by public servants and its
18th century fort. Upon arrival to Macapa we will visit the Vila
de Curiau. This village, 12km from Macapa, has a feeling that
the time has frozen in time. This historical site is an environmental
protection area and a gathering of Negroes descended from quilombolas,
runaway slaves who, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries,
used to assemble in hierarchically established communities, called
quilombos. About 45 families grow and process cassava, fish, raise
cattle and make baskets. After our visit to the village we will
stop by the Fortress of São José. This Fort is a
square building surrounded by walls with a pentagon shaped bastions
forming the mariner's compass card. The Indians and slaves built
this fort in the course of 18 years (1764-1782) to protect the
the French invasion from the Guiana. Then we will take a short
city tour of Macapa where we see the point zero Equador Line .

Day
5 -
Macapa - Today we will take a tour of the Pororoca (magnificent
and thunderous tidal bore collision between the Amazon River and
the Atlantic Ocean. When the river reaches its delta it forms
many islands by alluvial deposit and submergence of the land.
When the River reaches the largest of these islands, Marajó,
the Amazon splits into two large streams. The northern stream
is the principal outlet and threads its way around many islands.
The southern channel, called the Pará River, receives the
Tocantins River and has the important port of Belém. The
awesome tidal bore is up to 12 ft/3.7 m high and it travels 500
mi (800 km) upstream. This river's immense silt-laden discharge
is visible far out to sea.
Day
6 -
Marajo Island - Transfer from the hotel to the pier for
a ferry boat cruise to the city of Salvaterra on Marajo Island.
Upon arrival on the Island transfer to the Pousada dos Guaras
and check in. After lunch, visit the city of Soure and its leather
handicraft factory followed by a visit to Arruna Beach where visitors
can watch several regional birds in their natural habitat. Afternoon
free at leisure.
Day
7 - Belem
- After breakfast, depart on board a regional boat to visit
a buffalo farm where guests will have the opportunity to observe
the flora and fauna during the 3 hours trip through the forest.
Horse and buffalo rides will be available and we will visit a
cheese and mandioc flour factory. We return to the hotel for a
lunch and at approximately 4:30pm we depart to Belem. This Para's
capital served as the main port in the region during the 19th-century
rubber boom. The famous Ver-o-Peso Market - designed and built
in England - is a reminder of that era. Each morning, local products
and crafts are brought to the market by boat and canoe. The market
is always filled with the pleasant hospitality typical of Belém
as well as a wide variety of tropicalfruits, food and local handicrafts.
Upon arrival, we will check in at our hotel and we will have a
early diner.
Day
8 -
Capanema - Before we depart Belem, we will take a city
tour of the city. We will visit Ver-O-Peso Market Located on the
river front, its the City's cultural and tourist landmark, one
of the best known symbols of the State of Pará and of the
Amazon Region, a place where one can find a sampling of the great
variety of regional products associated with local custom and
culture. We will visit the Basilica de Nazare, Castelo Fort, Se
Church, and Paz Theater, built in 1878 this theater is consider
one of the most beautiful in Brazil. Built by the private initiative
in the golden times of the rubber. Its neoclassical style, with
Greek columns in the facade, the theater possesses lobby and interior
of the noble living room with paintings of thematic Amazon. After
our city tour we'll take a short drive to the city of Capanema
.
Day
9 - 11 - Sao
Luis - Early in the morning we will drive toward to the Maranhao
State capital, Sao Luis. The city, with ¾ of a million
inhabitants, was originally founded by the French in 1612 and
later occupied by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. The Portuguese influence
was greatest, of course, and this is reflected in the stately
mansions and their intricate tile façades. São Luis
is located on the island of the same name. In the next couple
days we will explore the culture and history of this World Heritage
site (Unesco) We will visit Avenida Pedro II (named after the
Brazilian emperor) we'll see some of the oldest buildings in Brazil,
such as the 1612 French fortress and later governor's mansion
the Palácio dos Leões (Lion Palace), the Palácio
La Ravardiere (Ravardiere Palace) which served as both city hall
and the town's prison, as well as the Igreja da Sé (the
Sé church) from 1619.

tour on the day 10 -
we also will offer an optional tour to the historic city of Alcantara.
Located just west of Sao Luis 1:30 minutes by ferry, this XVIII
was the commercial center and the aristocracy heaven of the Northeast
States. Once Brazil abolished slavery and the price of cotton
dropped in the international market, the city went through a prolong
century decay. Today the city is being renewed and we can visit
the old town and house and feel the ostentations this prosperous
period.
Optional
tour on day 11 -
Barreirinhas - We'll leave São Luis to the city of Barreirinhas
where we will be transferred in 4x4 vehicles to the Lençóis
Maranhenses National Park, the largest such park in northeastern
Brazil. Situated on the northern coast of the state of Maranhão,
the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park consists of
a unique landscape of rolling dunes, some reaching ten meters
(33 feet) in height. It's practically a desert with thousands
of crystal-clear lakes surrounded by picturesque dunes, mangroves
and beaches. The park derives its name from the fact that the
vast expanse of dunes resembles bedsheets (lençóis).
On the way, we will visit Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and either dos
Bentos or Lagoa Bonita. Return to Sao Luis late at night.
Day 12 - Calcoene
- This morning we fly to the city of Macapa to catch
our bus back to Cheynne. We overnight in the city of Calcoene.
Day
13 - Cayenne -
Leave early in the morning to Cayenne. Upon arrival we have the
rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the city, do the last minute
shopping and chat about your experiences in this adventurous last
two weeks.

14 -
Return - We will be transfer to Cayenne International airport
to fly back home.
